CECI N'EST PAS L'ART

wednesday, the very middle of the work week and i am already anxiously dreaming of the weekend. this one especially, which is a long one too!
so i thought i might treat us all with a fun diy based on art history - my favorite!
well,
i was in need of a journal but am very picky about the design, thus i decided to make my own cover and here i will show you how. it is an easy peasy tutorial so stick with me and let's have some fun messing around with paper, grown-up style, shall we?
first of all find your source of inspiration. will it be pop art, noir films, deconstruction?
well, i chose rené magritte, whom i have always admired for the brilliant meanings behind his paintings and their sharp yet somewhat discrete irony.
here are the four things we will need:
except for scissors and glue...

a plain journal, like this one i found in papyrus which is really a refill, scrapbooking paper sheets, a paintbrush and color of course.
first of all measure the journal on the sheet of paper and leave about two centimeters on either side to fold in. this way we will create two "enveloped"sides where the journal's cover will sit comfortably in.
cut around just as in the image above and fold in the sides that say "fold". as you may notice there are four thin straps that protrude on the "envelope" parts, those are to be glued to the inside of the cover to secure the folding so your artistic cover won't slip of.
after that is done...paint or collage your cover.
if the paint makes it bumpy you can iron it over a baking sheet.
i am planning on decoupaging magritte's green apple on one and painting with black ink "ceci n'est pas un journal" on the other, like his "treachery of images". hee hee!

will you try this out? what will you do on your cover then?

xoxo!

I love it when tutorials don‘t seem too difficult! Trace, cut, fold, secure, done! Definitely trying this!

Nice DIY! I'm a sucker for surrealism and I love Magritte, so I liked your proposal ;).
